Weekend Roundup

It is going to be a beautiful Fall weekend. The leaves have changed in the canyon and the sun is still shining. Now is a perfect time to get outside and enjoy what makes Utah Valley special. Start with the Alpine Loop Scenic Backway on SR-92. You can enter the loop from American Fork Canyon or Provo Canyon past Sundance Resort. You can enjoy vistas of Mt. Timpanogos and impressive aspen groves. There are campgrounds and picnic area available. Once you get out of the car enjoy a great hike into the Lone Peak Wilderness area.

Another great option for Fall colors is the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway. To get there take I-15 to Payson Utah. The Byway winds between the cities of Payson and Nephi. The road climbs 9,000 feet, taking you to stunning views of Utah Valley from the south end and Mt. Nebo, the highest peak in the rugged and beautiful Wasatch Range.

Spooky Stories: American Fork Canyon

It is said that if you do three circles at the top of Tibble Fork Parking Lot, you will come to the fork when exiting the canyon and a hearse with red lights will follow and chase you.

One account states; “I never did donuts or the three circle crap. I was about 9 years old and we had moved from Nevada. My dad loving the mountains we would always go on Sunday drives and digging in our old Bronco, one time during the day we were driving down and a hearse did fallow us down the canyon I remember me and my family being really freaked out and quite the whole way down. I don't know if someone played a prank back then but it scared us. I later found out about this myth about 3 years ago and couldn't believe that something like that goes on. I was up there this past year and our car started acting weird with some friends and our music was playing some weird stuff. I definitely think that place is mysterious.”

Just when I thought I had experienced all the typical Halloween activities, I was proven wrong once again. Saturday night C and I went on a trip that can pretty much only be explained through our pictures. 

We traveled out to Camp Floyd to participate in some ghost hunting. Yes, ghost hunting. We arrived around 7PM when the sun was just about down. It was the perfect eerie setting for this small and possibly haunted town. Our adventure started in an old school house where we watched a presentation on ghost hunting and learned different techniques. They showed us what to look for in pictures and showed examples of previous participants photos. After that, they shut off the lights to all the buildings and we were on our own for a ghost hunt. Now the reason I told you to play the song above is because that is what was going through my head the entire night. I was a ghost buster!!

I had no idea who was coming out, but I snapped a photo and it was the lady who called out to the ghosts. Coincidence that the giant orb is by her?

Camp Floyd only puts on two ghost hunts each year and unfortunately the other session is already filled up. But check out this site so you have it on hand for next year! You'll want to hurry and book your trip before they fill up! 

The Family Tree Restaurant

The Family Tree Restaurant in Santaquin produces more than delicious family home cooking for its patrons. Guests and employees both have felt the presence of ghosts, who are said to inhabit the Main Street structure, stacking furniture, seeing shadowy figures, hearing growls, unexplained banging and noises or the spirits touching them in passing. The family has always seen and heard things that they could only explain as ghost activity. Most of the claimed occurrences happen in the basement of the restaurant, but they have been known to occur throughout the entire location. One such account claims a clock’s broken second hand started working again, only in reverse, for several hours. There have also been several occasions that the owners of the restaurant have come into their business in the morning only to find chairs stacked on tables. A small boy, said to be about 7 to 8 years old, with an old fashioned “bowl” hair cut fashioned into his dark hair and a long, skinny face has been seen on numerous occasions by the proprietors.  

One guest stated constant feelings of being observed and watched in both bathrooms as well as in the West Room and in the basement areas. In the kitchen area they experienced that some spirits were there and at least one was trying to communicate with them directly by making noises near the telephone and the bread that was lying out on the table. In the West Room area they saw shadows that moved around the floor near the bathroom entrances and in the top corner of the room there appeared a black, misty form that liked to stay up near the ceiling. The guest also claimed tickling on the back of their neck in the West Room. The guest went on to say they experienced overwhelming feelings of extreme unfairness for the other sprits who were trapped and felt the urge to provoke the hovering “misty form” and the other possessive and controlling male spirit, to try to and seek justice for the other trapped spirits.

Another guest claims while in the basement of the restaurant, they heard footsteps above them on three separate occasions and felt extreme tingling on the back of their neck on several occasions. They say they also saw shadows observing them from all around he room, giving them the feeling they were weak and powerless, and then feeling something/someone tug at the back of their shirt.

A third guest says in the back room area, behind the kitchen, they kept thinking they were seeing something down one of the hallways. They claim seeing something peek it’s head out from the corner of an old bathroom or hallway. Other people with the guest stated they saw the same thing as well. In that same area and also in the basement, feelings of something or someone right behind them were watching them.

It is believed that what's holding many of the spirits here is an American Indian curse laid on the area by a local tribe angry at the white settlers.

Folklore, Ghosts, and Biking

Recently I think I came across one of the coolest Halloween activities Provo has to offer. And yes I am fully aware that I say things like that often, but if you only check out one activity this Halloween, this is the one you need to do!

A coworker of mine overheard someone talking about a ghost tour of Provo and told me about it so I did what anyone else would have done, I did some research on Facebook. And sure enough I found the Provo Cycling Ghost Tours. Reading one post about this activity was enough for me to book our adventure.

This is Provo Cycling Ghost Tour's first season being open and they did an amazing job! Derik and Max, the two who started this awesome tour, were inspired by Salt Lake's ghost tour. Realizing that Provo didn't have anything like this, they hit the books. They spent hours in the archives at the library researching the history of Provo and stories and events that have taken place in the area. Hats off to these two because they had some crazy stories to share. All that research paid off.

So here's how the Ghost Tours work - you head over to this link here and sign up for the tour. They take place every Saturday through October at 10PM. You meet at the statue at Memorial Park in Provo (800 East Center Street) with your bike. And don't worry, if you don't have a bike or can't find a friend who will loan you theirs, you can rent one from them for $2. Best part of this tour is the price tag. It's $3 a person or $5 for a couple. AMAZING deal people! They accept cash only at the start of the tour. The online registration is just to reserve your spot.

Once everyone has arrived, they hand out glow sticks to put on your bike and your ghost journey begins! The tour takes about an hour and a half and is approximately a 5 mile ride. Don't worry if you're out of shape like I am, there are no hills you have to bike up; it's a super easy ride. They take you to 6 stops along the way with a story to share at each location. My favorite part...they have a ghost detector that everyone gets a turn holding! It will flash red when a ghost is present.

Unfortunately being on a bike didn't allow me to take very good notes, so Max and Derik were kind enough to remind me of some of the stops:

After all the cycling around, they even surprised us with Krispy Kreme donuts and Apple Cider. Needless to say we were all ecstatic. 

Food is always a good surprise

Now I would say this activity is appropriate for ages 13 and up. Mostly because you bike for awhile and the stories are creepy. We honestly had the best time last Saturday night. It was so different from anything else that Provo had to offer. Provo Cycling Ghost Tours, I can't wait to do this again next year! 

Spooky Stories: The Hutchings Museum

The Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another. If the human spirit is energy, then upon death the energy of that essence needs to go somewhere.

Three teams of paranormal investigators descended on Lehi's Hutchings Museum in May 2008, spending the night searching for ghouls.

The teams fanned out, poking into the museum's nooks and crannies with thousands of dollars of high-tech equipment, hoping to catch the voice of a ghost on tape or an image on film, or even just the electromagnetic signature of the disembodied.

“Not only is the [Hutchings] Museum haunted, the ghosts can be rather, er, physical,” said Michelle Lowe of Key2rip.com, one of the teams that spent the night investigating. "It was interesting," she said. "We didn't expect much to happen, but we had a couple of experiences."

Investigators several times heard what sounded to be "additional footsteps, like people were being followed through the basement," she said.

One of the investigators was grabbed on the leg by a ghost, she said.

 "There is no 911 for ghosts and hauntings, and some people need help and don't know what to do," said Amber Mandic of Key2rip.com. "Some people even sell their homes to get away from it."

Paranormal investigators can discover the cause and give advice for getting a haunt to leave, she said. And sometimes, what looks to be a paranormal problem is actually something much simpler.

On one occasion, what a homeowner was convinced was a ghost turned out to be a raccoon in the attic, said Mandic. One another occasion, the culprit of strange noises was a bat

Sometimes, when investigators find ghosts, the homeowners are pleased, having just wanted confirmation all along that they "are not crazy," investigators said.

And sometimes, homeowners want the ghosts to hit the road, the solution to which could be as simple as redecorating -- painting a haunted room pink and putting up Disney-themed decor can get rid of a surly male ghost, for instance.

A Pirate's Life for Me

I feel like Colby and I haven't blogged in a while. I'm so sorry. But we have cooked up quite the treat for you this month! All of our dates have a "haunted" theme to them. We discovered some crazy things you can do here in Utah Valley for Halloween that we had never heard of. And when I say crazy, I really mean it; just you wait for all these blog posts this month!

This week we discovered an activity that if you can't find a babysitter for your kids, they can come too. We heard about CLAS Ropes Halloween Adventure Cruise and thought we'd go check it out. I'd also like to throw out that all the couples that were "too busy" to come really missed out! Colby and I had so much fun.

CLAS Ropes is located on Center Street in Provo down by Utah Lake. When you arrive, they have a Halloween movie playing while you wait for your group to be called, along with concessions for purchase.
 

We had about a 30 minute wait, so we grabbed some popcorn and enjoyed the movie. The captain (tour guide) of your boat announces your group name and you follow him down the path leading to the dock. The dock was covered in lights and spider webs; prepping you for your adventure on the boat.

I didn't know this, but the river you float down is actually the Provo river. CLAS Ropes has decorated the river banks with over 100 hand-carved pumpkins that reflect off of the water. Not to mention all the amazing light work they did along the river. This truly is a unique boat adventure. Your captain shares scary stories and songs and a pirate even comes to attack your ship. Luckily, the pirate is a pretty nice guy, and brings candy with him to share :)

The boat can accommodate up to 40 people so don't be surprised if there is a small wait to get on! You can also reserve an entire boat for your group for just $175 Tues-Thurs, or $195 Fri, Sat, and Mon. The ride costs $8.00 per person to ride. You can find a dollar off coupon on their website here. The ride is open now until October 31. They are open 6:30pm-9pm M-Th and 6:30pm-10pm Fri & Sat.

Eat Like a Pilgrim

This event looks pretty inviting right?? We thought so too! For those of you who don't know about the Eat Like a Pilgrim event at Thanksgiving Point, you need to get familiar.

Don't Trash Em-Smash Em!

As Halloween season comes to an end here in the Valley, some people might be getting a little saddened!  This year we have had a great run of fighting our way through corn-mazes, riding the Sundance haunted ski lift, pumpkin blasting, driving the Alpine & Nebo loop and much, much more. But don't let's not get too ahead of ourselves here, there's still more!

As Cornbelly's finishes off their final weeks, they're inviting you out to their first annual Pumpkin Smash!  We like the sounds of that. On November 2 and 3, you can bring your left-over jack-o-lanterns to Cornbelly's for a smash 'em, bash 'em kind of weekend. From the sounds of it, no pumpkins are going to make it out alive! The event will feature helicopters, dunk tanks, cranes, cannons, and more.  We don't know about you, but this sounds like the perfect way to cap off the greatest Halloween season yet.  The kids are going to love this and so will you.

Safe Trick or Treating

 We want to wish you all a spooooktacular Halloween from all of us at Utah Valley! One thing we hope everyone does this year during the Halloween season is to keep safe.  There are so many opportunities here in the Valley to have a fun and safe Halloween with your families, so please take part in them.  One of those opportunities is the Trick-or-Treat on Center Street event that is being put on by Downtown Provo, Inc.  Here's the details about it (and trust us, you won't want to miss out!): 

*Over 50 businesses will be passing out candy from 3-6 pm on Wednesday, October 31

*A bonus magic show will be happening on the steps of our very own Utah Valley Convention Center 

*Prizes will be awarded to the best costumes 

*A donation area will be collecting non-perishable food items to donate to the Community Action Food Bank

Riverwoods Pumpkins!

The Shops at Riverwoods have been giving away pumpkins at Malawai's Pizza but have just run out! They gave away these pumpkins with hopes that recipients would bring back their pumpkin carved beautifully to be entered into their pumpkin parade/contest.  All pumpkins brought in will be lit and put on display at the darling Riverwoods shopping center. 

However! We have found out that even if you didn't claim a pumpkin from Malwai's, you can still bring your own pumpkin to The Shops at Riverwoods to enter their contest/pumpkin parade. Your carved pumpkins are due tonight (Thursday) so make sure you get them down to the shops! If you didn't carve a pumpkin, hop on down there anyways to see all of the entries. The first place winner will claim $200, 2nd $100, and 3rd $50! The pumpkins will be lit everynight of the pumpkin parade.  We thought this would be such a fun tradition to start with your kids!  

Grab a fall apple pie caramel apple from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and enjoy the fall air. Riverwoods is fabulous during holiday seasons!

Unique Halloween!

 If you are looking for a unique Halloween celebration this year, look no further than the CLAS Ropes Course in Provo.  Every year they set up a hundreds of lights and carved pumpkins along the Provo River.  Guests take part in a cruise along the river to view all of the magic and listen to their captain tell spoooky stories.  Many families have made this a tradition and we have heard nothing but great things.  As always, remember to keep the kids bundled up and help them discover the magic right here in Utah Valley.  Fun is for everyone!

Tickets are $8 per person and the cruises have already started.  The last night to take the spooky tour is October 31!

BYU Homecoming Week

 
If you are wondering what to do this week, you should wonder no further! It's BYU Homecoming week which means Provo is going to be packed with things going on.  This is a huge week for BYU.  We'll do our best to keep you posted this week but as far as tomorrow goes, you should worry abou the Opening Celebration. The festivities for Homecoming kick off at the Opening Celebration tomorrow, October 9, at 11:05 am in the Marriott Center.  Meaningful messages will be shared in the meeting, followed by a Cougar Marching Band exit towards Brigham's Square where there will be a free barbeque for all.  Past priesidents and current presidents of the Alumni Association, Student Alumni Association, BYUHSA, and the president of BYU will all be involved.

Food at the barbeque will be served from 12:00 pm- 1:00 pm so make sure you get yourself to Brigham's Square in time for the festivities! And yes, you heard us right, this is a free barbeque! Good thing these afternoons are warming up a bit!

Beach Cruisin in the Fall?

Before it gets too cold! Cruise on down to Provo Beach Resort and rent a bike; a beach-cruiser to be exact! Yes, you heard us right too, you absolutely can rent beach cruisers right here in Utah Valley. You can take them up the Provo Canyon trail-way and embrace the fall colors even more.  What activity would be better for a family, date, or individual?

Heber Valley Railroad Search!

 

The Pumpkin Festival at the Heber Valley Railroad is coming and they are search of volunteers to help make this year's event cooool.  If you would like to volunteer as a witch, dracula, or a mummy and perform on the train, they want to hear from you! Other volunteer help is also needed. It all starts on October 18th with trains at 4 and 5:30 pm. The days are Oct. 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 27, 29, 30.

It's Time!

Who else has been counting down to the opening of Cornbelly's Corn Maze and Pumpkin Festival?? It's safe to say that we sure have! This is Utah’s original corn maze that always is a favorite. This year CornBelly's will features a tribute to a few of 2012’s biggest stories with maze designs showcasings the upcoming presidential election, as well as the 100th birthday of girl scouting.

We have to remind you that the maze isn't the only thing you're going to want to do at CornBelly's--so plan on taking time! Think pedal kart racing, paint ball galleries, barnyard ball zone, scarecrow scavenger hunt, campfire scary tales & s'mores, insanity point haunts, and much more.

However, we have a couple tips for your corn maze visit:  

*Wear good shoes (that you aren't afraid to get potentially a little dirty!)

*Dress warm and don't forget about keeping your hands warm!

*Grab some hot chocolate before or after (it's all part of the experience)

*Don't hurry too fast through the venue---take time to visit the Grain Train Maze where you hop aboard the grain train for a fun ride through the corn 

*Shoot the pumpkin blasters and corn cannons! You will become addicted

*Pick out a pumpkin to carve at home
*Spook your friends
*Bring a camera for their fun photo locations

*Embrace the beauty of falltime!
