A goodbye to Dave & Cranky's

The time has come to say goodbye to one of Utah Valley's restaurant Dave & Cranky's, but they're not going out with out a fight! Regular service ends this Saturday, but you shouldn't miss their "wake" Monday nigh. Come and party with the staff and owners one last time.
Make sure you stop by this week to enjoy a special "best of" menu. Start your night off with some nachos, it's a regular's favorite or the goat cheese fritters. The garlic rosemary chicken is a perfect meal and end the night with the pazookie. It's amazing and who doesn't like a little cookie and ice cream? Make sure to call and make a reservation or expect a wait. So stop by and say goodbye to this amazing Utah Valley restaurant.
The good times Monday night will include light snacks and drinks. The entertainment will be the brass section from The Strike. It will be a good time had by all.

Utah Valley Marathon

Spring is supposed to be here (although you wouldn't guess it by the weather we're having) which means it's almost summer, which means it's almost short and swim suit season, which means I should have been working out all winter long so my legs were ready to be debuted. Oops.

Festival of Colors

Spring is here and there is no better way to celebrate that in Utah County than the Festival of Colors at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork. The Festival of Colors, or Holi, is held every year to announce the arrival of spring and the passing of winter. Events start Saturday March 29  at 10 am and ends Sunday at 4 pm.  The festival has musical interludes, the lighting of a bonfire, burning of an effigy, and the throwing of colors on friends and strangers. The dry colored powders you can buy at the temple for $2 a bag are non stain, but you should still wear something you are ok with getting a little more colorful. I would suggest a white v neck t-shirt. Admission to this years festival is $3, for $2 more you can park at the Spanish Fork Fair Ground and ride the shuttle to the festival. Make sure to leave early so you can get through traffic.

Talking about Spring, we are having a spring giveaway! Check out our website, www.uvtogether.com to enter to win a digital camera from the Tulip Festival!

Weekend Roundup

Welcome to the first week of Spring in Utah Valley! The flowers are starting to come up and it's going to be in the high 50s all weekend. It's the perfect time to get out and explore the mountains, lakes and canyons. Not all the trails are open, but there are some really good ones just waiting for you to find them. Start with Y Mountain trail. It is 1.2 miles long and climbs 980 feet with 13 switchbacks. Its a good hike, but not to hard for the whole family. If you are looking for something a little slower try the Provo River trail by Bridal Veil Falls. They are amazing in all seasons!

If you are looking for something inside, try one of these great plays this weekend.

BYU Presents-Pride and Prejudice: Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice will be on stage in Pardoe Theater. Laugh, Cry and Delight with the quick witted Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters as they search for love. After all, "a ladies imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment." The play is adapted for the stage by Melissa Leilani Larson and directed by Barta Heiner.
Location: Pardoe Theater, BYU Campus
Price: $9-$17
Hale Center Theater Presents-Big River: Huckleberry Finn, a Missouri boy, hates the "civilized" live, and decides to fake his death and live on his own. However, Huck's retreat is cut short when he runs into Jim, a run-away salve. Fearing capture, the two set off on a raft down the Mississippi River in search of freedom. A musical based on Mark Twain's big-hearted American adventure of self-discovery and true friendship.
Location: 225 West 400 North, Orem, Utah
Price: $4-$21
BYU Presents-A Man for all Seasons: A man for all seasons, directed by David Morgan, the play demonstrates how conscience and corruption collide in the powerful historic portrait of Sir Thomas Moore.

Tomorrow (Saturday March 1, 2014), Provo city will be hosting a Mardi Gras Masquerade! Dress your best and put don a mask for the frivolity and celebration. There will be live music, prize giveaways, appetizers, and desserts. The party starts at 7:00 pm at the Provo Recreation Center. Cost is $15 per person.
John Lithgow presents "Stories by Heart" at BYU

John Lithgow Presents "Stories by Heart" at BYU tonight, February 28, 2014.

"Following his triumphant appearances at new York's Lincoln Center and London's National Theater, the Tony, Emmy and Golden globe Award-winning actor offers a touching and humorous reflection on storytelling as the tie that binds humanity. Invoking memories of his grandmother and father before him, Lithgow traces his roots as an actor and storyteller, interspersing his own story with two tales that were read aloud to him and his siblings when they were children - "Uncle Fred Flits By" by P.G. Wodehouse and "Haircut" by Ring Lardner. In the first, a fretful young Englishman is taken on a wild afternoon escapade in suburban London by his irrepressible uncle. In a hilarious tour de force, Lithgow performs with zany abandon, portraying ten distinct, outrageous characters (including a parrot). By contrast, "Haircut" is a darkly comic look at mid western American implacability."

History Camp Scholarship

Though funding from the Masonic Foundation of Utah, the Friends of Camp Floyd is offering a scholarship program to allow 4 kids the opportunity to attend Camp Floyd’s History Camp at no cost.  Additionally, each family will receive a $30 transportation stipend to cover the cost of gas to and from Camp Floyd and cover lunches for 3 days.  The goal of the program is to make history camp accessible to those who might not be able to afford the experience.

Camp Floyd History Camps for kids are a fun-filled educational experience about how soldiers lived at Camp Floyd in 1861, and how the Utah War served pre-Civil War objectives. Campers meet costumed interpreters, play 19th Century games, drill, march and set up a soldier's camp, fire an 1860's period firearm, make and take home soldier craft activities. Other activities include conducting a full-scale military exercise; and observing muskets and a cannon fired. Participants will receive a history camp tee shirt, kepi, replica rifle, canteen, haversack, yo-yo, and more.
To qualify for this program, each camper must not have attended Camp Floyd’s History Camp in the past and be between the ages of 8 and 11 at the time of your chosen Camp date.  Additionally, the parent or guardian must explain why they require a scholarship for history camp on the application.

To be eligible for the scholarship a parent or guardian must complete the application on this website

Then the child who wants to attend camp must write a short essay or draw a picture describing why he or she would like to attend Camp Floyd’s history camp for kids.  This can be scanned and e-mailed to MeganKeller@utah.gov or mailed to:

Camp Floyd State Park
18035 West 1540 North
Fairfield, UT 84013

Online application and short essay or drawing from child must be received by January 31 2014. Final decisions will be made by the Friends of Camp Floyd and recipients will be notified by February 21, 2014.

Background on Camp Floyd:
Established in 1858, Camp Floyd housed the largest concentration of U.S. troops then in the United State.  The troops were sent to Utah to suppress a rumored Mormon rebellion, which never took place.  The army was recalled back east in 1861 for the Civil War emergency.

Camp Floyd State Park is located in the town of Fairfield, 22 miles southwest of Lehi on State Highway 73.  For more information please contact the park at: 801-768-8932.

U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree comes to Spanish Fork

The 2013 Capitol Christmas Tree comes from the Kolesville National Forest, home of the Upper Columbia Children’s Forest, one of 22 such Children’s Forest across the Country. The Children’s Forest Initiative of the Forest Service was created to provide opportunities for kids everywhere to explore their connection to forests and nature.

As this gift from Washington State travels across the country to our nation’s capital, it reminds us of all that nature provides, from clean water and clean air to outdoor recreation and education. The national network of Children’s Forests is proud to be a part of this annual celebration.

The tree was harvested November 1 and then wrapped for its’ journey. This extraordinary tree (known as the People’s Tree) will travel with companion trees across the country before arriving at the capital in time for Thanksgiving. Spanish Fork has been honored to be one of the “Whistle Stop” cities.

Please bring your families to City Park on Tuesday, November 12, 2013, to help us “welcome” the tree.  This 100 foot long tree in its’ plexiglass container will be on display on Center Street from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. that evening. A small ceremony at 7:00 p.m. to include our Mayor, City Council, SF Youth Forest and State Representatives will be held. Maple Mountain HS Madrigals will also perform.  Following the Welcome Ceremony families can visit tables and canopies featuring promotional, educational and commemorative merchandise.

This evening’s celebration will help jump start the wonderful Christmas traditions already in place in our beautiful Spanish Fork.
