Savoring Summer: A Round Up of Utah Valley BBQ Joints

School is starting soon and everyone is scrambling to squeeze in a few more moments in the sun, playing outdoors and savoring summer's best! One of our favorite parts of summer is the barbeque! (Vegetarians and vegans, avert your eyes!) If you're also a fan of juicy grilled meats massaged with seasonings or coated with sauces, check out some of these fantastic BBQ restaurants here in Utah County!

http://www.bambamsbbq.com/
I typically do my best to eat like a lady but when ribs are involved, all bets are off. Let's talk about the delicious beauties found at Bam Bam's BBQ (1708 S State St. Orem) tender and very meaty with just those little pops of fat that add to the overall richness of each bite! Bam Bam's has a number of different sauces that you can add to your meats (which are, of course, delicious) but you definitely don't *need* them. I would also recommend their brisket or turkey - succulent and sassy, I loved them both!

Five Star BBQ Facebook
Want something a little more smokey in the rib department? How about the smoked ribs at Five Star BBQ (70 N. Geneva Rd. Orem)? With those trademark pinkish bones that you see with smoked meats, you can't go wrong with these ribs! I know a well-smoked piece of meat when I taste one - and these ribs are definitely well-smoked! And don't you dare forget to pair it with the amazing smoked beans!

Sean's Smokehouse Facebook
Looking for something other than red meats? Have you even tried the smoked turkey at Sean's Smokehouse (222 E SR 73, Saratoga Springs)!? It pairs perfectly with everyone of their delicious sauce (which are basically a taste-tour of the country) and, I could seriously eat it all day! The smoked chicken is pretty fantastic as well but... I personally love me some turkey! They also have a Ghost Chili Wing Challenge, if you're tolerant to insane levels of spiciness and wanna step up to the plate.

http://www.poorboysbbqdawgs.com
Speaking of smoked meats, have you ever seen Poor Boys BBQ & Dawgs (865 Highway 198, Payson)? It's kind of hard to miss seeing as how there's a line of smokers right out front and beware when you step out of your car because the smell will make you drool! Do not skip the smoked sausage! If you don't really like sausage, it's only because you haven't tried these. If you're dining with littles, they have yummy, hand-dipped mini corndogs. And for desert, I would go for the peach cobbler (assuming you haven't completely stuffed yourself at this point).

Oh dear, I've gone and made myself hungry! Run, don't walk, to these fantastic BBQ joints before the summer's over (and then keep em in mind for fall and winter when you're missing those good ole' flavors of summer).

Restaurant Spotlight: SOS Drug

SOS Drug has been located at 214 South Main St. in Springville since 1909. It is a fully functioning pharmacy, but what caught our attention was the soda fountain that was put in during the 40's. They serve malts, shakes, floats, cones, soda, and sundaes. Everything is made with Meadow Gold ice cream and served out of the original freezer! Even the swivel sets are original, walking into SOS Drug is like walking into the past. It is one of the only places like this around.

We tried the strawberry milk shake and loved it, it was made by hand right in front of us with fresh strawberry and hard served ice cream. Some other flavors to try are chocolate chip and cookie dough, both are amazing. You can get it in a cone for around a $1. It is the perfect place to take the kids, go on a date, or just hang out with some friends. Come and enjoy the ice cream and get a little bit of American history on the side.

Restaurant Spotlight: Ike's Creamery at Provo Beach

Our summer time adventures this week took us to Provo Beach in The Shops at Riverwoods where you can surf, play, and eat Blue Bell ice cream at Ike's Creamery. Ike's is the only place in the whole state of Utah where you can get this frozen treat. They change out the flavors on a regular bases so you can try something new every time you come in! I really enjoyed the Southern Blackberry Cobbler and the Pecan Pralines 'n Cream. How could you go wrong with flavors like that?  What makes Blue Bell so good? It is made the old fashioned way and taste like it was hand cranked. It is only available in 15 states, but is still in the top 3 in the nation. The Ice cream is shipped all the way from the factory in Texas. Ike's Creamery is all about the Blue Bell ice cream, even the shakes are made with it!
Ike's is a 50's style ice cream parlor with everything from mint green walls to red and white booths. You can even have your ice cream served in a 50's style glass. Everything is done with quality in mind, they even make their own homemade waffle cones!
If you want to make a date out of it, try getting some ice cream then renting a bike from Provo Beach to enjoy the surrounding Provo Canyon with. You can get a tandem, single cruiser, kids bikes, and this little beauty.

With the Moon Shining all Around

Hello, my name is Anna. I am the resident Sales Coordinator at the Utah Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau. My husband and I both graduated from Brigham Young University this April and we’re tickled to be living in Provo!
Friends, let’s talk bucket lists, have one? We do, we’ve pretty much had the same Utah Valley bucket list the last three summers but have finally decided to do something about it this summer. Which is why when Monday, July 22 rolled around; we decided to try out the Sundance Resort Full Moon Lift Rides. These are evening scenic lift rides that Sundance Resort offers over every full moon from May through September. Note: you can ride their lifts all year round. In the summer months their lift runs during the day from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. But on full moon evenings in the summer, they re-open their lift from 8:30 – 11:00 p.m.

Not only was the experience relaxing, but also so refreshing! Sometimes we all need to escape to the mountains a little bit. The evening we went the weather was absolutely perfect. Fun fact: as we were standing in line to get on the lift, my husband told me that this was his first time EVER on a ski lift! I enjoyed teaching him how to not get pummeled by the chair (lessons I learned the hard way as a child).

While our lift ride adventure was very low-key and relaxing, a few changes in our evening could have changed the experience. Here are my 4 tips for tackling the Sundance Full Moon Lift Ride:

1.        Think about your feet. When I was getting ready for our Full Moon Lift Ride date, I fought the urge to wear my cute moccasins and instead opted to go for shoes that tie. I could just imagine one of my favorite shoes falling to its demise 30 feet below. I have friends that take their shoes off, which is fine if you’re willing to risk getting mosquito bites on your feet.

2.      Check the weather. Don’t forget to check the weather forecast before you go, and remember, it’s always more chilly in the mountains. Therefore, plan your layers accordingly. When we went we both wore long pants and brought jackets – which we were really grateful for. Some people were there with blankets. The night we went you wouldn’t have needed both a blanket and a jacket, but again, that was the night we went.

3.      Plan your Timing. We left Provo at 9:00 p.m. By the time we drove up to Sundance, parked in the upper lot and took the shuttle down to the resort it was 9:30. After a quick trip to the bathroom (Tip 3B – Go to the bathroom before getting on the lift, it’s 45-50 minutes roundtrip and there’s nowhere to get off at the top to go), and thanks to pre-paid tickets, we went to the front of the line. However, I have other friends who got there about the same time as us and did not have either a season pass or pre-paid tickets and had to wait in line 45 minutes just to buy a ticket. By the time we were almost done, they were just getting on.
Length of line at 9:30 vs. an hour later at 10:30
4.      If possible, pre-purchase. If you want to avoid long lines the night of, you can pre-purchase full moon lift ride tickets at the Sundance ski rental shop, which is open from 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

We seriously had so much fun. Not only is the location breathtaking, but it was also cool to catch a glimpse of different features of the resort (e.g. the amphitheater, the lodges, cabins, ski hills, etc.). Please go, you will be glad you did. The next full moon lift ride is Monday-Wednesday, August 19-21.

Until next time friends, happy adventures!

Weekend Roundup

Hello there my weekend warriors. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and it's time to get pumped for the weekend. There is so much going on this weekend, so don't waste it. Lets start with something that is truly unique...The 19th Annual Llama Fest. It's tomorrow, July 20, 2013, at the Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork. Bring the whole family for a fun and educational experience. This festival stays true to its original purpose, "highlighting llamas and their owners in a cultural context of food, music, spinning and weaving demonstrations, music, dance, and competitions." They even have a showcase of Andean craft items like jewelry, rugs, shawls, carvings and clothing. Come hungry because the food booths will offer south of the border favorites like chili, nachos, emphanadas, braised vegetables with fried curd, bread pudding, spicy wraps, and lemon mango fruit drinks. The kids can enjoy the baby llama corral where they can see them up close.
Trying to come up with a date night idea? Well do I have one for you! Open Air Ballroom at the SCERA. Bring your dance partner and learn Latin Ballroom basics under the stars at their outdoor courtyard gardens. For the first half you will learn the moves, the last half you can shack what your mama gave ya at a mini dance. Here is a song to get you in the dancing mood.

It's time for the Rodeo-the 71st Annual Fiesta Days Rodeo that is. With four action-packed nights of top professional rodeo action, bucking horses, the ferocious 1-ton bulls, the brave (and attractive) cowboys and cowgirls. Rodeo events include: bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tie down roping, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, women's barrel racing. July 20, 22 children get in for only $6 and adults for $11 (grandstands spots are $13.50). On July 23 and 24 children and adults are $13.50 (grandstands spots are $16.50). American Fork is also finishing up their annual festival Steel Days this weekend. The Grand Parade starts at 9:30 am on Saturday July 20, 2013.
After all this fun in the sun stop by Coneys Frozen Custard in Orem for "Christmas in July." They are having sales on custard, two flavor of the day, Nutcracker and Peppermint Candy Cane. The really cool part of this event is that Cheryl Love will be there from 12-4 signing her new novel "Christmas Love."

Shows closing this weekend:
The Sound of Music
The Blue Bird Cafe Series
Red nation Promotions Presents: We Are Alive

A Girls Perspective

I consider myself a pretty adventurous person. I enjoy trying new things. Climbing up tall buildings, jumping off 20 foot docks, zip lining; you name it, I'll probably try it. I mean you only live once right? Or at least that's what the rapper Drake says. So when Colby told me we were going kayaking you would think I would be super excited. Correct answer: no.

The usual reaction when he tells me what we're doing consists of me jumping up and down, clapping my hands, and probably making some weird noise. Yes, I react like a kid whose parents just told them they were going to DisneyWorld. This time when he said we were going kayaking my eyes got big and I said, "Oh okay. I'll go." Not the usual reaction. He knew right away I wasn't excited and I made up some lame excuse as to why I wasn't over the top giddy. Truth was I was scared out of my mind! Colby kept talking about rough waters and flipping over in the kayak. And seeing as I've never been kayaking, that did not sound like fun. AT ALL. I thought for sure I would end up in the hospital or end up dead.

The plan was to double with his roommate, who we'll call D, whose family let us borrow their inflatable kayaks. Well when it was time to go D was no where to be found. To my excitement this meant we didn't have to go kayaking! A couple hours later Colby called saying D showed up and they were leaving in an hour. At this point I was laying out by the pool so why would I want to leave (pool + sun = my best friends). When I heard D found a date, who we'll call M, I was a little more comfortable with the idea of going. If another girl could do it, so could I!

Before and after inflating the kayaks
We drove two cars and parked the first one at Vivian Park which is where our adventure would end. Vivian Park is located about 6 miles up the Provo Canyon. We drove the other car to a place just below Deer Creek Dam. When driving up the canyon, you will see a paved road that heads off from the highway on the right just below the dam. Here you can park and easily access the river. This is also where everyone else is getting in the river so you can't miss it.

With no direction on how to paddle from the boys, we headed towards the river. Getting in the river was a little tricky because we were trying to avoid big rocks...a downside to having an inflatable kayak. But once we started going it wasn't bad at all. That's right, it wasn't hard! The ride starts off kind of slow which is perfect to practice your steering.

Riding down the river was such an amazing experience. At some points the river was so calm I wouldn't paddle and just soaked in the gorgeous scenery. The banks hid the sights and sounds of the busy highway. The river alternates between slow peaceful bends and some exciting rapids...nothing too crazy though. I mean I did survive to write this story.

D & M seemed to find themselves in the bushes a lot
Now had a girl told me about kayaking down the Provo river and how much fun she had, there's no way I would have been so nervous. There's something about knowing if another girl like me can do it, then so can I. Is anyone else like that? Why is that? I would have been so much more excited and confident if I knew exactly what to expect and heard it from another woman.

Our ride came to an end when we reached Vivian park. There's a bridge that you do not want to go past. When you've reached the end, make sure you get off on the left because on your right is a private park, which is where we got off and got in trouble. Oops!

No permits are required to ride the river, but life jackets are. We rented ours from BYU Outdoors Unlimited. It was only $5 per life jacket. As for attire, I recommend wearing your swimsuit, flip flops, and sunscreen. Again, something only a girl would care about knowing which is why I'm mentioning it.

If you don't have access to inflatable kayaks you can rent some from High Country Rafting. They even offer guided river tours. For more info on riding down the river visit our website.

The Provo river is perfect for beginner kayakers, such as myself. The ride only took us about 75 minutes. You don't need any experience to make this a fun trip. Kayaking was way more fun than I ever thought it would be and for all you ladies reading this, if I could do it, anyone could do it.

Once again I have to give Colby credit for coming up with another super fun date. He never lets me down! We want to hear your ideas...what should we do next?

"A bow, Fergus? She's a Lady!"

Recently at the CVB, we’ve been thinking about ways to revamp our blog and have been listening to your requests and ideas on what you would like to see on here. With that said, we have decided to add a dating segment to our blog! We would never want to give you ideas that aren’t good, so I have volunteered me and my boyfriend to try them out.

Every week we will go on a themed date of sorts; some ideas that we come up with and others that are submitted to us. All of which will take place somewhere in Utah Valley. Before committing to this assignment, we were talking about how much there is to do in Utah Valley and how sometimes couples get stuck trying to figure out something fun and new to do. We have made it our mission to create original and fun date nights that couples of all ages will enjoy.
I think it’s best to start this dating segment with a little introduction. I have been dating my boyfriend, Colby, for four months now. Engaged? No. Thanks for asking. We both graduated from BYU and are working full-time here in Utah Valley. Colby graduated in Marketing and I graduated in Advertising. Yes they go hand-in-hand, but I like to say Advertising is way more fun! Some of our favorite things to do include cooking for each other, wearing matching outfits (never on purpose), going on adventures, and playing glow-in-the-dark bocce ball (it exists…buy a set online. You won’t regret it).

I have to admit, it’s a little daunting exposing our dating life to the world, but the challenge is something we can’t wait to take on and I’m so happy Colby is on board! The boyfriend is already super creative with our dates and with this assignment at hand, I cannot wait to see what he comes up with.
So you’re probably wondering at this point what is going on with the title of this post. It is actually a quote from the movie, Brave, which segments into our first Utah Valley date night. Using Brave as our inspiration we had Scottish night. Now not everything about this night was ‘technically’ Scottish so please don’t fault us.

Our first part of the date was archery. We had no idea you could take archery lessons. I was a little hesitant at first thinking I would make a fool of myself, but I ended up having a blast and turns out we weren’t that bad. We traveled to Jake’s Archery in Orem for our indoor shooting adventure. Jake’s was great because you could rent equipment if you don’t have your own, which for most of you I’m guessing you don’t, and they give you lessons. It only cost $10/person for an hour of shooting and for rental equipment. Not a bad deal! Side note, make sure you wear closed toe shoes. You never know where those arrows might end up…

Part two of our date was making crepes. Okay, Colby made crepes because I’m crepe incompetent. This is where the Scottish theme gets a little iffy, but we made them green if that counts for anything. With all of our favorite toppings piled on to our crepe, we sat down and watched Brave. Earlier we stopped by Redbox to pick it up and in case you didn’t know, there is a whole list of free codes you can use at Redbox to make date night just a little bit cheaper. I’m all about saving where you can!

Utah Valley date night #1 was a success! I'm excited to see what he comes up with next. And we would LOVE to hear from you!! Remember the best date of your life? What was the coolest thing you did in Utah Valley? We want to hear about it! Comment below and give us some ideas of what we should do next and it might be featured on the blog!

Timpanogos Storytelling Festival:

Fall is coming and with that comes:
The 23rd Annual Timpanogos Storytelling Festival
Coming to life from August 30-September 1st

The event has become a highly-talked about subject across the entire country and you can't miss the giant white tents up at the Timpanogos Park in Provo Canyon when you go on a fall drive. Skilled storytellers from across the country venture out to the Valley to tell their tales in this festival, which is the LARGEST storytelling festival in the nation! We want to come right out and say that there is all the reason to gravitate toward those tents at the Timpanogos Park and SCERA Shell Theater in Orem because this is an event that you HAVE to experience.

Be part of the crowd! Immerse yourself in the shadow of the great Mount Timpanogos to hear voices echo across the valley.

The schedule of events goes like this:

  • Storytelling Workshops are perfect for teachers, genealogists, speakers and performers alike.
Friday and Saturday-
